It starts with stone.

We build loudspeakers around one conviction: the panel the drivers push against must not move. So we cast that panel ourselves, from our own granite composite, and design everything behind it to deserve it. Two models wear that stone — a reference, and a speaker for smaller rooms.

Two rooms. One voice.

Both speakers are fronted in cast ShtormStone, both were modelled before they were drawn, and both carry the same tweeter in the same cast waveguide — which is why they sound like close relatives. The difference is the room they were designed for.

Dougan Ref. K

The reference

A three-way on a 40 mm, twenty-five-kilogram stone face: a 275 mm woofer in its own chamber, the midrange in a ten-kilogram stone egg, and a cast waveguide for the tweeter. Eighty-five kilograms of speaker, for rooms with room to listen.

Dougan Ref. A

For smaller rooms

A two-and-a-half-way on a 30 mm stone face: the Ref. K's tweeter and waveguide, twin 182 mm drivers sharing the bass, and a front port that tolerates a nearby wall. One metre tall on a quarter-metre of floor, content with one good amplifier.

One family

Why they sound alike

A loudspeaker's character lives in its dispersion — the way sound leaves it in every direction, not just toward the chair. Both speakers hand their treble to the same 30 mm dome through the same cast waveguide, matched to the driver below at the crossover, so they throw the same kind of soundstage into very different rooms.

And both stand behind the same conviction about stone. The Ref. K's shape came out of some thirty thousand finite-element iterations; the Ref. A was modelled the same way, by the same tools, to the same standard. The smaller speaker is not the lesser one. It is the same thinking, scaled to the room.

Every Dougan loudspeaker is designed by an American engineer who made Russia his home, and every pair is built here. We hold the work to one standard — the kind you check with a straightedge and a measurement microphone, not the kind that shifts with the map. A speaker either measures right, or it does not leave.
